“Design of Polyoxometalates based Nanohybrid for Energy Conversion and Biological Applications”

Polyoxometalates (POMs) combine the advantages of heterogeneous solid-state oxides with the chemical tunability of molecular species. They are currently employed in energy conversion and storage, catalysis and medicine to name a few. Our research is centered on the developments of POMs in technologically relevant conditions by developing novel embedding concepts, leading to advanced nanostructured composites. Here, we will discuss concepts for embedding of POMs into functional composites with a special focus on embedding of POMs in conductive matrices as an attractive route for electrically “wiring“ POMs to conductive materials. These concepts have led to composites where redox-active POMs are linked to carbon nanotubes, graphene, enabling applications in battery materials and electrocatalysis development. In addition, we will talk about the biological applications of these kind of POM nanohybrids, including their application in contrasting agent for NMR, CT and also for enhance absorption of X-ray to treat tumor. The talk will examine how different linkage strategies enable the design of materials with unique properties and stability.

Guangjin Zhang (age : 41) is Group Leader at the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE), CAS for Photo/Electrochemical Catalysis and Energy Storage. He obtained his M.Sc. in Chemical Technology at Institute of Coal Chemistry, CAS, focusing on fabrication of novel carbon materials. His PhD studies were performed at Institute of Chemistry, CAS (supervisor : Yao Jiannian) where he studied in the field of polyoxometalate photochromism. He spent a postdoc at University of Paris XI, working on biological application of polyoxometaltes. In 2009, he returned to China to take up a “One Hundred Talent” program of IPE as independent group leader at IPE. He published more than 80 papers with H-index of 32.
